Hewitt Dazzles in Relief, Raiders Win Game 2

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Raiders split a doubleheader with the Methodist University junior varsity on Monday afternoon. The Monarchs took Game One 2-0, but FM won the nightcap 7-6.

Raiders' reliever William Hewitt pitched a game to remember as he shut down the MU offense in Game Two. The righthander entered the game in the fourth inning, with the Monarchs leading 6-3. Hewitt then tossed three and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing no hits, no runs, no walks, and striking out five while earning the win.

FM batsmen hit safely 14 times in the double bill. Jon Wingate, Lewis Lima, and Zach Hughes all stroked doubles in the Game Two win. Wingate had three hits in the doubleheader.

In Game One, Head Coach Dave Hennessey handed the ball to freshman Kyle Casimir. Casimir pitched six innings and allowed only three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven batters. However, Methodist University's Seth Beard and the Monarch fielders were able to keep FM from scoring. Beard got credit for the 2-0 win. Raiders DaShon Boyles and Wingate each had two hits in Game One.

The Raiders will now have a two-day stay in Whiteville, NC. They will play two games on Tuesday afternoon, first facing western New York foe Jamestown CC and then taking on Southeastern CC-Whiteville. Both games will be played on the Southeastern CC campus. On Wednesday, FM will play a doubleheader with Southeastern CC-Whiteville.

Schedule Changes

The unusual winter weather has forced some postponements in the northern portion of FM's schedule. The Raiders' first northern game is now set for Tuesday, April 7 at Columbia-Greene CC. The Twins' field is usually one of the very first in the area to become game-ready.

The softball schedule has also been adversely affected. The Lady Raiders will play at Onondaga CC on Sunday, March 29, weather permitting, and they are currently scheduled to host Cayuga CC on Saturday, April 4.
