Raiders Sweep Jefferson Behind Hewitt and Maldonado

WATERTOWN – FM's ballplayers earned two wins on Thursday. They rolled to victory over Jefferson CC in a game shortened by the run rule, and they fought their way to a win in a game that required two extra innings.

Pitcher William Hewitt shut down the Cannoneers' offense in the first game. Moundsman Christian Maldonado pitched the final three innings of Game Two and slammed the door on Jefferson's batters.

Game One

It was all FM in Game One. Four Raiders crossed the plate in the first inning and five more came home in the second. Meanwhile, FM's Will Hewitt kept the Jefferson batters from doing any damage.

Shortstop DaShon Boyles hit safely three times in the game. Andrew Houser went two-for-three, and hit a three-run home run. James Waters stroked a double and a triple. In all, eight Raiders hit safely in the game that was shortened to five innings by the run rule.

Pitcher Hewitt was on top of his game. Hewitt struck out four, walked three, and allowed only one run in the 15-1 romp.

Game Two

The second game was very different from the first. The two teams played on even terms for six innings. The home team led 12-10 after three innings, but FM came back and the game was knotted at 13-13 after six frames.

Head Coach Dave Hennessey then sent Christian Maldonado to the mound, and "Maldo" was terrific. He pitched the final three innings, allowing no hits while striking out four and walking only two.

The Raiders scored the winning run in the ninth inning. Lewis Lima doubled. Kevin Chrisman fell behind with two unsuccessful bunt attempts but then drove in Lima with a single to left field.

FM's record is now 9-15 overall and 4-6 in Region 3 play. Jefferson is 5-19 (4-10).

The Raiders will next play a four-game series with Schenectady CCC, with two games at FM starting at 1:00 on Saturday and two more on Sunday at Central Park in Schenectady. The Royals are 6-11 (5-3).
