Raiders and T-Wolves Split Season Finale

GLENS FALLS – The Raiders traveled to Glens Falls on Thursday to meet the Timberwolves of SUNY Adirondack for a doubleheader at East Field. Each team won a game in what was the season finale for both teams.

Game One

Timberwolf Tom Shofi singled home a run in the first inning. FM starter William Hewitt and the Raiders' defense then basically shut down the Adirondack offense through the first five innings.

FM scored four runs in the second. Andrew Houser singled. Zachary Hughes drove Houser home with a double to deep left field. Hughes then advanced to third base on a delayed steal. Lewis Lima singled to left. Jon Wingate and Baylee Hall added RBI-singles. FM led 4-1

DaShon Boyles scored in the FM half of the third inning. Adirondack's John Natle crossed the plate in the home half of that frame. 5-2 FM.

The Raiders added runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, upping their lead to 8-2, but the T-Wolves roared back. Adirondack scored three runs on four hits in the sixth and tallied again in the seventh. The final score was 8-6, FM.

Game Two

The Raiders went down in order in the first inning. Andrew Houser singled to lead off the second, and James Waters drilled a shot that was caught up against the Home Depot sign in deep left-center field, but FM could not score.

Adirondack scored with a suicide squeeze in their half of the second. Matt Stevens laid down the bunt that scored Mike Nicastro, who was charging in from third base. Tom Shofi had been on second, but came around and scored when FM tried to get Stevens at first base. The inning ended with Adirondack ahead 3-0.

FM trailed 4-0 entering the sixth. Designated Hitter Zach Hughes hit an RBI double. Right fielder Lewis Lima singled in Hughes, but two runs were all that FM could score. Adirondack won the game 4-2.

FM and Adirondack had played two good games, and both teams saw their weather-reduced seasons end too soon. The Raiders said their good byes to one another near the left field bull pen, and the Timberwolves did the same down the right field line.

Some of the Raiders will continue to play college ball next spring. Fireballer Christian Maldonado has accepted a baseball scholarship to play at Erskine College. James Waters has done likewise with Mercy College.

The 2015 season saw the Raiders play a lot of good baseball, and this writer thoroughly enjoyed watching them.
