Softball Season to Start on Sunday

JOHNSTOWN – It's been a long winter, and the FMCC softball field is still partly under snow, but the Lady Raiders are ready to start their season on Sunday. The original schedule called for games today and Saturday at FM, but those games had to be postponed. Sunday's game is with Onondaga CC, on Onondaga's artificial-turf field. The forecast is for sunshine and 41 degrees, which would be cold but playable.

Head Coach Meghan Power's team has been honing their skills in the Raiders Den. The squad has been using the new batting cage and other batting stations. The Raiders Den also has enough space for full-size infield practice.

The 15-player roster includes returning pitchers Taylor Bubniak and Alyssa Palmateer, both of whom enjoyed success in the circle last season.

Also back in the fold is Stephanie Rice. Rice was a key member of both the 2014 softball team and the Lady Raiders basketball teams of the past two seasons. She was able to return to softball practice this week after taking time off to nurse an injury sustained on February 27 in the final basketball game of the season.

New members of the team include impressive freshmen catchers Ashley Przybylowicz and Lauren Balfe. They may share time behind the plate and also play elsewhere in the infield or outfield. Freshmen Abby Boyer and Rebecca Shepard, like Rice, played on the Lady Raiders basketball team this season and are now applying their athletic talents to softball.

Coach Power has been pleased with the team so far. "We have more depth this year," stated Power, "and there's been good competition for positions." Power, who was a standout player herself at Mohawk Valley CC and SUNY Brockport, is clearly eager to see the Lady Raiders in competition.

The first game, with Onondaga, will be a good challenge. There are 20 teams playing softball in Region 3 this season. Onondaga is ranked #4 in the regional pre-season coaches' poll.
