FM Impressive in Win Over Lakers

JOHNSTOWN – Freshman Silvia Vasquez Rivera sank a three-pointer from the right corner to open FM's game with Finger Lakes CC on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Raiders built on that lead and never trailed, defeating the Lady Lakers 90-62.

Evanda Redwood led the Lady Raiders in scoring, and score they did. They tallied at a torrid pace, putting 27 points on the board in the first 10 minutes of play. Redwood had a huge first half, scoring 21 of her 24 points in those 20 minutes. Vasquez Rivera and Co-Captain Jessica Woney both scored 10 points, and Co-Captain Stephanie Rice added nine in first-half action.

The Lady Raiders' offense was a pleasure to watch. They did a good job of getting the ball to the player who was in the best position to score. Woney and Vasquez Rivera dished out half a dozen assists each.

The Raiders built a commanding lead in the first 20 minutes. FM led 52-31 at the break.

Sophomore Rice had yet another big game. Rice is a force at both ends of the court, and she usually wins the center-court jump ball. On Saturday she scored 16 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and blocked three shots.

Freshman Abby Boyer continued to impress. Her 10 points and eight rebounds are only partial indicators of her play in the forecourt.

The Lady Raiders are currently ranked #4 in Region 3. Their record is now 8-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Their non-conference game with Finger Lakes was their final contest of the semester. The season and Mountain Valley Conference action will resume on January 8 with a 4:00 p.m. game at Herkimer CCC.
