Lady Raiders Roll at Herkimer

HERKIMER – The Lady Raiders traveled to Herkimer on Thursday afternoon to take on the Lady Generals. It was the first post-holiday game for both teams.

The long holiday break can leave some teams and some players rusty. Not the Lady Raiders. They had gone into the break with a five-game winning streak. Also, Evanda Redwood had upped her offensive production with two very impressive games in December. On Thursday it did not take long to see that both the team as a whole, and Redwood as a sharpshooter, had not lost their edge.

FM took the lead right away, and the Lady Raiders outran and outplayed the Herkimer Five for the full 40 minutes. Abby Boyer put in a rebound for the game's first score, and then Redwood showed that she still had the hot hand. Sophomore Redwood soon took three shots from beyond the arc, and she netted all three.

Boyer followed her first tally with another two-pointer. Torri Richard scored with a steal-and-go, giving FM a 12-0 lead. When Redwood's third try swished in, it was 15-0. Co-Captain Jessica Woney nailed a three to make the score 25-4 midway through the first 20 minutes.

Stephanie Rice netted a long three-pointer, and then she sank one from the left corner. FM led 34-9. Rice was proving that she is among the region's top players. Rice entered the game with a points-per-game average of 17.2 (the region's fifth best) and 10.2 rebounds per game (the region's fourth best). Rice topped both of those marks on Thursday with 23 points and 17 rebounds.

The Lady Raiders led 50-20 at the half and kept control of the game throughout the second stanza. Head Coach Kevin Jones substituted players liberally, and nine Lady Raiders put points in the FM ledger. The final score was 90-46.

FM is now 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the Mountain Valley Conference. The Lady Generals are 4-6 (1-3). FM's next outing will be on Saturday, January 10 when they host Mohawk Valley CC in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
