North Country Women Stay Undefeated

SARANAC LAKE – North Country CC's Lady Saints are ranked #1 in Region 3 women's basketball. On Tuesday the #4-ranked Lady Raiders traveled to NCCC's evergreen-covered campus to take on the regional leaders. FM gave them a stiff challenge, but the Saints preserved their lofty ranking and won 79-60.

The home team jumped out to an early 9-0 lead. FM Co-Captain Jessica Woney got the visitors on the board with a three-pointer from the right side. Abby Boyer added a 15' jumper, and then Boyer connected on a two-pointer from out near the arc. Evanda Redwood added two free throws, and NCCC's lead was cut to 11-9.

Redwood completed an old-fashioned three-point play to close the score to 13-12. Woney sank a three from the right side and was fouled hard while shooting. She went to the line and completed the four-point play, putting FM in front 18-17.

FM led again when a Woney trey made it 21-20, but that was the last time that the Lady Raiders would enjoy a lead. Stephanie Rice's FT's kept it close, at 24-23. Redwood sent Torri Richard on a breakaway that Richard turned into a three-point play, making it 29-26, but North Country used great defensive anticipation and an impressive offense to increase their lead from that point on.

The halftime score was 42-33 in the Lady Saints' favor. The final score was 79-60.

North Country has assembled an interesting team, with players from five different states. On Tuesday both teams were missing one of their regular players, but both teams should be at full strength when the Lady Raiders meet the Saints again in mid-February.

The Lady Raiders are now 9-5 (4-2). The Lady Saints are 12-0 (4-0).
