A Nice Win for the Lady Raiders

A Nice Win for the Lady Raiders

CORNING – The Lady Raiders controlled most of the game with the Lady Red Barons of Corning CC on Monday afternoon. The visitors posted their third win in a row, beating the home team 67-60.

Co-Captain Jessica Woney gave FM the first points of the game. Woney sank a three-pointer from the right side. The Corning squad kept pace for a few minutes, but FM guard Radasha Pope sank a three from the left side for a 10-8 lead, and the Lady Raiders were ready to make a scoring run.

Abby Boyer took a pass from Evanda Redwood and scored.  Stephanie Rice sank a three. Redwood sank two from the free throw line. Redwood passed to Angel Gittens, who scored. (See photo at the bottom of this web page.) FM led 20-14.

The only negative was Gittens getting hurt, with 5:48 on the first-half clock. Fortunately, the sophomore guard was able to return and play well later in the second half.

Woney fed Rice for two. Redwood sank a three, and Rice scored a pair from beyond the arc. Rebecca Shepard took a pass from Pope and scored. FM led 37-25 when the teams left the floor at halftime.

Corning Head Coach Becky Copp must have made some adjustments during the break. The Corning Five came out scoring and playing better defense, and the Lady Raiders went into a scoring slump that lasted more than nine minutes. That segment of the game brought back memories from a year ago when Corning met FM in the Raiders Den. FM seemed to have had that game under control, but the visitors never quit. The Corning crew came back and pushed FM into overtime before the Lady Raiders finally won.

This year, on the Corning hardwood, Corning cut into FM's lead and closed to within two at 41-39, but the visitors would not relinquish the lead. FM's Redwood sank a three-pointer to put the Lady Raiders ahead 44-39 with 10:10 left in the game. Woney added a trey, and FM was re-taking control.

Redwood scored again from long range, as did Rice. Boyer scored with an assist from Woney. Rice was fouled while shooting and sank both FTs. FM led 58-48 with 5:23 to play.

Corning was scoring, but so was FM. A Woney field goal kept FM's lead at 10 points with less than two minutes remaining. The Lady Raiders managed the end game well and won the non-conference contest 67-60.

Steady Stephanie Rice had a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds for FM. Sarah Whitney had a double-double of 12 and 10 for Corning.

FM is now 12-5 on the season. Corning's mark is 8-10. The Lady Raiders' next outing will be a Mountain Valley Conference game at SUNY Adirondack on Saturday, January 24. Tip time is 1:00 p.m.
