FM Women Impress at Delhi

DELHI – FM's women won their game with SUNY Delhi's Lady Broncos on Saturday afternoon, and they did it with a modified lineup that showed impressive balance and team depth. The visitors won 68-49, extending their winning streak to six games.

The Lady Raiders' starting lineup in recent games has featured talented guards Jessica Woney and Radasha Pope. Pope was kept out of the game at Delhi to rest and recover from a minor injury. Woney played her usual strong first half, but was shaken up in a collision early in the second half and had to leave the game. Still, FM's balanced  offense did not miss a beat. Freshman Silvia Vasquez Rivera started at guard and led the team in scoring. Angel Gittens and Torri Richard filled in admirably for Woney.

Both teams' offenses started slowly, but the Raiders soon got theirs in gear. Abby Boyer scored in the paint, with a nice assist by Woney, for an 8-7 FM lead. The Lady Raiders then upped their offense, tightened their defense, and led the rest of the way.

The speedy Vasquez Rivera darted in and out of and through the Delhi defense and tallied 10 first-half points. Gittens, Stephanie Rice, and Evanda Redwood each added half a dozen points to FM's ledger in the first half.

FM led 34-21 at the break and added 10 more points in the first five minutes of the second half. Delhi closed the gap to 50-40, but Co-Captain Rice quickly sank two three-pointers and a jumper to put FM firmly in control. Freshman forward Abby Boyer added eight points to the Raiders' second-half total.

The final score was FM 68-Delhi 49.

FM's next game will be at home in the Raiders Den on Wednesday, Feb. 4, when they host Herkimer CCC. The start time is 5:00 p.m.
