Jefferson CC’s Strong Play Ends Lady Raiders’ Season

SYRACUSE – The tall and talented Lady Cannoneers of Jefferson CC were seeded #5, and the Fulton-Montgomery Lady Raiders were seeded #4 in the Region 3 championship tournament. They played on Friday afternoon, and the Jefferson Five won the contest 72-54.

FM had defeated Jefferson 69-62 back in November when the team from Watertown visited FM. Both squads have improved since then, but Jefferson's starting five includes three players who had outstanding years. Sophomore Alyssa Crosby was named the Region 3 Player of the Year. Teammates and fellow sophomores Kristin McGraw and Kathleen Coloney were named to the All-Region Third Team. Crosby lived up to her billing and led all scorers with 27 points on Friday afternoon.

Lady Raider Stephanie Rice also earned all-region honors. The 5' 10" sophomore was named to the All-Region Second Team. Rice led FM on Friday with a 16-point outing.

Jefferson took an early lead, but free throws by Abby Boyer, a long two-pointer by Jessica Woney, and a three-pointer by Silvia Vasquez Rivera gave FM a 14-10 lead after six minutes of play. Jefferson retook the lead at 15-14 and never trailed again.

The Lady Cannoneers led 38-30 at the break. Jefferson managed the second half well and went on to post a 72-54 victory.

Jefferson (19-7 overall) will play #1-seeded Onondaga CC in the semifinals on Saturday. Onondaga won their Friday match with Schenectady 96-48. The tournament brackets are available on the Region 3 website.

The Lady Raiders ended their season with a 17-9 mark. They were 17-7 in Region 3 play and 11-5 in Mountain Valley Conference contests.
