The undefeated women's basketball team entered the Region 3 semi-finals on Saturday, February 25th and hosted the North Country Saints. The Lady Raiders used a balanced attack to defeat the Saints, 78-56 and improve to 20-0 on the season.
On Sunday, FMCC hosted the Region 3 Championship game against #2 Onondaga Community College and continued their dominance.
FMCC came out of the gate strong. The Lady Raiders got into some early foul trouble but were still able to take a 22-9 lead after the 1st quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lazer offense could not get much going against the stifling defense of FMCC. Mary Ellen Querrie scored at the buzzer to lead her squad into half time leading, 44-24.
Kiya Marquez scored 14 third quarter points to ignite the home team offense. Abigail Lombardoni drilled back-to-back three points to open the final quarter and the FMCC Lady Raiders downed Onondaga, 84-45 for a Region 3 Championship Crown.
Marquez finished the game shooting 83% from the field and scored a season high 35 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. She was also named Tournament MVP. Abigial Lombardoni finished with 14 points and Makenzie Smith with 13 points and 6 boards.
Head Coach Kevin Jones has led his team to a 21-0 record and the most dominant season in program history.
"What a great team win for our program. Really proud of how we have played selfless basketball all season. Now it's time to gear up for the next step at the national tournament," said Jones.
FMCC is now ranked #2 in the nation and await the NJCAA Selection Show on March 8th at 3:00 p.m. to determine who they will match-up against. The Lady Raiders will compete in the NJCAA DIII National Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota on March 15-18th.
