Lady Raiders shut out Spartans

Lady Raiders shut out Spartans

Auburn, NY – The Lady Raiders earned their first win of the season on Wednesday by shutting out the Cayuga Spartans 6-0. Four FM players scored goals, and one goal was an "own goal" knocked in by a Spartan fullback.

Playing conditions were very good on the Cayuga home field, located on the shore of Lake Owasco – one of the eastern-most of the Finger Lakes. A 10-15 mph wind blew diagonally across the field, but that did not seem to adversely affect play. The breeze also cooled the unseasonably warm air.

The Lady Raiders took charge from the opening kickoff. In the sixth minute, Co-Captain Cari Cestone put a shot just over the crossbar. Moments later Co-Captain Hanna Cromie and Carly Washburn put shots on goal.

Most of the early play was in the Spartans' defensive end, but when the red-shirted home team got into FM's end, the Raiders' fullbacks and goaltender Sisina Macchiarelli turned them away. Macchiarelli also gave FM good field position with her long punts.

Angelica Perez scored the first goal 13 minutes into the game. She made a long, high shot from 35 yards out that bounced over the Cayuga keeper and into the net.

Carly Washburn made it 2-0 midway through the first half. Hanna Cromie sent a fine through ball to Washburn who was then on a breakaway. She used her speed and savvy to find the back of the net. (See photo at bottom of story.)

Maris Plank moved up to a forward position for a few minutes, and the move paid off. Plank received a pass from Perez and placed a fine shot past the goalie. 3-0 FM.

Three minutes later Perez netted her second goal of the afternoon, with an assist by Leah Reinke.

FM's fifth goal came with 7:34 left in the half. Courtney Rivenberg and Amanda Edwards were putting a lot of pressure on Cayuga's defense when a Spartan fullback accidentally knocked the ball past the keeper.  The half ended with FM leading 5-0.

The second half saw FM continuing to control play and managing the clock. Cari Cestone scored FM's only goal of the half when Hanna Cromie sent her on a breakaway. Cestone recived the ball just on the Cayuga side of the midfield stripe. She then sprinted the distance, controlling the ball and making an accurate shot from 17 yards out. 6-0 FM.

Cromie also came very close to scoring during the second stanza. Carly Washburn sent an accurate throw in down the right sideline directly to Cromie. The tall freshman ran down the right wing, then cut in behind a defender and fired a hard shot on goal. Cayuga's keeper jumped high and may have deflected the shot. Regardless, Cromie's shot smacked the far post and rebounded away from the goal.

Women's Soccer Head Coach Rich Monroe was pleased with the efforts of the entire team. He also commended goal keeper Macchiarelli for earning her first "clean sheet" of the season.

The squad will now prep for their next outing. They will play the Lady Vikings of Hudson Valley CC on the Troy campus at noon on Saturday.

Videos will be added to this story in the near future.
