Moving Up: FM Ranked Third in Region 3

JOHNSTOWN – The weekly Region 3 volleyball coaches' poll was announced today, and the Lady Raiders are ranked third among the 18 teams in the region. This is the highest that the FM Six have been ranked in recent years.

Head Coach Rachael Salvione took the reins of the program last season. Her 2013 squad finished third in the seven-team Mountain Valley Conference. However, that solid team was not ranked among the top five in Region 3.

This season's squad is off to a great start. They lost their first match of the season to the defending conference and region champs, SUNY Adirondack. The Raiders then went on to win their next seven consecutive matches, including two against top-ranked teams.

The current Region 3 poll has 13-0 Monroe CC in first place, followed by 9-2 Adirondack and 7-1 Fulton-Montgomery. The fourth and fifth teams are Jamestown CC and Niagara CCC. The Raiders met Jamestown and Niagara in pod play on September 13. FM defeated Jamestown in straight sets 25-21, 25-23, and 25-14. FM also defeated Niagara, downing the ThunderWolves in four sets 25-18, 20-25, 25-21, and 26-24.

The Lady Raiders' next outing will be a pod meet at Onondaga CC this coming Saturday. FM is set to meet Cayuga CC at 10:00 a.m. They will also play Onondaga CC and Jefferson CC later in the day. A week later, on October 4, the Raiders will travel to Rochester to take on top-ranked Monroe CC in pod play. They will also meet Finger Lakes CC and Corning CC on that date.

There is a lot of volleyball left to be played this season, and the Lady Raiders must maintain their focus.  Still, it is appropriate for the team to strive to earn a postseason berth and to do well in regional play.

That season-opening match vs. Adirondack on September 10 was a well-played contest. Adirondack Head Coach Xiao Li and FM Head Coach Salvione spoke after the match, expressing respect for each other's team. Coach Li suggested, and Coach Salvione agreed, that it would be a pleasure to see these same two teams meet in the postseason. This writer thinks that would be a splendid matchup.
