Volleyball Dances into Region III Semi-Finals

The Lady Raiders Volleyball squad competed in the Region III Championship pool play on Saturday.  FM played Broome, Finger Lakes and Onondaga CC.  Each match there were three sets played and the top two teams in FM's pool would move on to the semi-finals. FM ended the day with a 5-4 record, good enough to move on to semi-final play on Sunday.

In the first match, FM went 1-2 against #6 seeded Broome; 26-28, 25-15, and 23-25.  In the first set, FM had to get the rust out after a 14 day layoff with no games.  FM jumped out to a 15-10 lead, but Broome kept it close.  Broome reeled off five straight points to take the lead 22-21.  FM thought they sealed the victory 27-25, but a controversial call on a rotation gave the point to Broome.  The Hornets were able to capitalize and win 28-26.  In the second set, FM settled in and dominated for a 25-15 win.  In the final set, Broome jumped out to a 22-18 lead and FM wasn't able to recover.

The Raiders played #7 Finger Lakes in their second match of the day.  FM jumped out to a 20-17 lead and was able to hold on for a 25-21 victory.  In the second set, the Lakers led 14-12, but Bri Egan and Megan Ryder led their team back to a 25-20 win.  In the third set, FM was able to gut out a crucial victory 25-23 to win the match 3-0. 

In the final match of the day, FM played #2 Onondaga who was undefeated on the day.  With their backs against the wall, the Lady Raiders had to win one set in order to move on to the semi-finals.  The Raiders could not get much going in the first set and the Lazers dominated for a 25-12 victory.  In the second set, FM showed up to play.  Ryder scored an ace to tie the score at 10.  FM went up 21-19, but Onondaga scored four unanswered points to lead 22-21.  The Raiders fought until the end, but came up short 25-27.  In the third set, it was win or go home for FM.  The Lady Raiders jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never trailed.  Danylak had a crucial back corner push to put the Raiders up 23-20 and FM was able to hang on for a 25-21 victory. 

FM, Onondaga, Monroe and Jamestown were the top four teams to move on to the semi-finals.  FM will play #1 seeded Jamestown tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
