Soccer Beats Jefferson in Double OT

Soccer Beats Jefferson in Double OT

The Men's Soccer team played two games over the weekend and came out with a split.  On Saturday, FM lost to Broome 3-0 and on Sunday the Raiders topped Jefferson in a double OT thriller 2-1.

Against Broome neither team scored in the first half, but FM had some mental breakdowns which led to three goals for Broome all in the second half.  Broome opened up the scoring in the 53rd minute and the Hornets scored again in the 58th minute off a penalty kick.  FM let up one more goal and took the loss 3-0.

FM bounced back on Sunday against Jefferson and both teams played a tight match and were scoreless again at the half.  In the second half both teams came out firing on all cylinders.  Aiden VanLoan ripped a shot from 30 yards out, but it sailed just above the cross bar.

With about 19 minutes to play FM had a mental lapse in the box, which led to a Jefferson goal.  The Raiders didn't hang their heads, as it took them just four minutes to find the back of the net and tie the score at one.  Justin Marek sent a pass to Hugues Kouassi, who then sailed it into the box and Matthew Smrtic was able to head it into the back of the net. Neither team could score in the final minutes of regulation and the game went into sudden death overtime.

In overtime, whatever team scores first wins.  With a minute remaining in the second over time period, FM finally got their chance.  Marek sailed a beautiful corner kick into the box and Justin Estremera was able to head it through the goal for a Raider win!

FM moves to 2-5 on the season and looks to get another win on Wednesday when they host Tompkins Cortland CC.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
