Lady Raiders Play Well But Bow to Lady Lakers

 

JOHNSTOWN – The Lady Lakers of Finger Lakes CC and the Lady Raiders played two on Saturday afternoon. The visitors prevailed by scores of 4-3 and 4-2, but the games were even closer than the scores suggest.

Game One

The visitors scored first, but FM tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning. Center fielder Lauren Balfe was the Raiders' runner on second when shortstop Stephanie Rice drove a single into left field. Balfe advanced to third and Rice alertly stopped between first and second, drawing a throw that allowed Balfe to score.

Alyssa Palmateer was in the circle for FM and pitched another strong game.

 

 

The Lady Lakers took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. FM got two runs back in their half of the fifth. Rebecca Shepard scored on Balfe's infield single. Balfe advanced to third and scored when Rice hammered a shot that the Finger Lakes third baseman could not handle.

FM loaded the bases in the sixth when Rebekah Reichard singled, Courteney Shaw drew a walk, and Balfe hit a line-drive single to left. Good infield play by the visitors kept FM from scoring.

Great defensive plays by FMCC shortstop Rice and catcher Ashley Przybylowicz kept the Lady Lakers from scoring the in seventh. The final score was 4-3.

Game Two (This year the home team bats first in Game Two.)

Taylor Bubniak was FM's pitcher in Game Two. The Lady Lakers scored a run in the second inning, and FM matched it with a tally in the third frame.

 

Finger Lakes scored again in the fourth when Daniele Ogrodowski doubled in two runs.FM answered with one run in the fifth when Courtney Putnam led off with a single and then slid safely across home plate on Stephanie Rice's double. The Lakers scored once in the sixth, and the final score was 4-2.

FM will take to the field again on Sunday afternoon. They will host a strong Corning CC team in a doubleheader that starts at noon.
