Lady Raiders defeat Erie at Niagara

Sanborn, NY – The steadily improving FM Lady Raiders defeated Erie CC in straight sets on Saturday, raising their season record to 2-3. Niagara CCC hosted a POD (multi-team) event in which FM played Niagara, Jamestown, and Erie.

The trip to western New York was a very worthwhile outing for the FM squad. They got to play some top teams after viewing the spectacular Niagara Falls. The quality of the day's competition is reflected by the NJCAA rankings, which have Jamestown rated as sixth-best in the nation, and by Niagara's sterling season record of 6-1.

FM's first match was against the Niagara ThunderWolves. The Raiders worked hard against the talented T-Wolves, earning 14, 16, and 19 points in the three sets. Elizabeth Hayward had 15 digs for the Raiders, and Caitlyn Hayward had 19 digs. Shelbey Lyons had 14 assists.

Next up for the Raiders were the Jayhawks of Jamestown CC. The Raiders pushed the Jayhawks to the limit in the first set before bowing 28-26. The Jamestown team then adjusted their play and swept the next two sets. Raider Sarah Wyzomirski drilled seven kills and blocked five Jamestown shots. Whitney Ostrander had an impressive 13 blocks. The Haywards had equally impressive dig stats – Caitlyn had 30 and Liz had 26. Shelbey Lyons had 18 assists against Jamestown.

The Raiders' hard work paid dividends in their third match of the day. FM swept the Erie CC Kats 25-17, 26-24, and 25-15. Whitney Ostrander blocked six Erie shots and powered seven kills. Sarah Wyzomirski delivered six kills. Emily Robinson recorded 19 digs, and Caitlyn Hayward had an amazing 32 digs.

Head Coach Rachael Salvione summarized the day, stating: "Overall, I am very happy with the results today. We changed a few positions around and recorded bigger numbers while defending the net. The girls played well today against some really talented volleyball teams in the Niagara region. Our girls have made many great improvements so far this season; unfortunately, the scores aren't reflecting these changes, but there is still a lot of the season left to play."

FM's next match will be on Wednesday, September 18 when the team travels to Troy to play Hudson Valley's Lady Vikings. The first serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
