Broncos Race to 89-72 Win Over Raiders

DELHI:  The Raiders and the SUNY Delhi Broncos met in what was expected to be a close game on Saturday afternoon. FM entered the game as the #5 team in the weekly Region 3 coaches' poll. The poll only lists the top five, and Delhi was not in that quintet. FM's record was 13-7 (7-4 conference), while Delhi had rather similar marks of 13-9 (8-3). However, Delhi dazzled with both a high-powered offense and a ferocious defense and won the contest 89-72.

The Raiders stayed with the Broncos throughout the first half. Guard Marquis Edwards tallied nine points and center Kyle Giddings contributed seven in the first 20 minutes. Delhi led by only four points, at 44-40, as the teams left the floor.

Delhi's 45-point second half carried the Broncos to victory. FM scored 32 in those second 20 minutes. The loss ended FM's winning streak at six games.

Ayodele Akinmola saw increased playing time. The quick and agile guard netted five points in each half. Two other Raiders scored in double figures: Edwards led the team with 15 and Giddings contributed 13.

Giddings led FM in rebounds with 11. Edwards and Dondre Davis grabbed eight apiece.

The home team Broncos also benefitted from 32 attempts from the foul line throughout the game, while FM had only 11 chances from the stripe. Delhi shot 21 for 32 from the line, and FM shot 7 for 11. Delhi also drained a most impressive total of 12 three-pointers.

The Raiders' next outing will be on Wednesday, February 4, when they host Herkimer CCC in a 7:00 p.m. start.
